When did going to a convention become such an uplifting and enjoyable event? It happened with the return of the urban downtown core as a desirable place to live. “Reverse suburbanism,” if you will. Downtown dwelling is now high in demand for younger generations seeking new high-tech condos and post-modern lofts in repurposed commercial buildings. That major demographic shift is bringing with it all kinds of new energy, tech innovations and hip restaurants, lounges, shops and cultural attractions into city centers.

Meanwhile, convention centers are capitalizing on the trend by integrating themselves into these urban cores and acting as community accelerators—a destination hub for the entire event, including pre/post. It’s happening everywhere, and it’s adding serious value for PCOs by offering unprecedented access to creative venues and experiences.

Few cities in the world pack such an impressive array of world class venues, hotels, restaurants and cultural attractions in such a small footprint as Singapore.

In the very heart of it, the Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre is progressing on a $140 million renovation slated for completion in May. Major work includes an all-new entrance experience, new express escalators and a high-tech, 2-story digital LED screen for branding, signage, videos, etc.

The facility will also offer what’s being promoted as among the world’s fastest public WiFi, free of charge, designed to handle the latest tablet apps during full capacity.

“The building has served us extremely well,” says CEO Pieter Idenburg. ”With the implementation of these planned enhancements, we will be well placed to meet the changing needs of our customers… well into the next decade.”

Further renovation plans include a new Suntec City Sky Garden with upscale dining and floor space for large musical groups and theatrical performances.

Suntec has direct access to 5,200 hotel rooms, 1,000 retail outlets, 300 restaurants, six museums and the futuristic new Esplanade Theatres On The Bay performing arts complex.
