InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) is making a big push into Portugal this fall with the signing of two new hotel projects in the capital city of Lisbon and wine growing region of Porto in the north of the country.
The new InterContinental Lisbon is scheduled to open in the next month in the city’s historic center and tony residential area of Park Eduardo VII. This is a rebranded, 331-room property with 18 flexible meeting and function rooms, located within a 5-minute walk of Lisbon’s major attractions and Avenida Liberdade’s upscale shops and restaurants.
Due to its comparatively close accessibility to the U.S., exceptional cuisine, local culture, and high-value rates, Lisbon is enjoying a boom in worldwide exposure, and because of that, the city is undergoing a wealth of improvement projects. For U.S.-based planners, Portugal meetings are especially popular for associations.
The country made a surprising jump this year from #17 to #13 in the ICCA rankings, while Lisbon ranks #9.
“Lisbon is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Southern Europe, and the signing of InterContinental Lisbon, overlooking the city and Park Eduardo VII, is a significant development for the brand in this region,” says Atlanta-based Christopher Koleros, area director of sales/marketing, Europe, IHG Hotels.
The mesmerizing port city prides itself on its delicious fresh seafood. No visit here is complete without a trip to Lisbon’s largest fresh food market, Mercado da Ribeira, for a local insider look at this tight knit community. Crowne Plaza Porto
In the charming city of Porto, meanwhile, the ex-Park Atlantic Hotel Porto is being recommissioned and renovated as the Crowne Plaza Porto. It’s located in Porto’s business district on Avenida da Boavista, about a 15-minute drive from the local airport.
Planners have access to 161 deluxe rooms, 29 executive rooms and 42 suites, plus 11 meeting rooms, as well as a diverse selection of local shops and restaurants within walking distance.
Just a short walk away from the new Crowne Plaza, check out the strikingly modernist Casa Da Música cultural center, which offers a wide array of interesting group function spaces for small to medium-size groups. The 12,000-sf Suggia Room theater is the largest space, hosting up to 1,000 attendees.
“Crowne Plaza Porto will be a meetings destination in its own right, and it’s well placed to provide quality accommodation and meeting support to business travelers and meeting attendees from around the world,” says Koleros.
