The Gideon Putnam

A three-month restoration breathes new life into the historic Gideon Putnam, located in Sarasota Springs, N.Y.

A water main break in January combined with a planned renovation that had been in the works for years culminated in all 124 guest rooms receiving new carpeting, paint, blinds and renovated bathrooms. The property’s public spaces also received a refresh, with the guest room corridors now touting artwork by local artist Frankie Flores on all three floors—all of which reflect some of Saratoga Springs’ best assets, including the Saratoga Race Course. Historic photographs also line the hallways, paying homage to the area’s past.

The hallways also received new carpeting, wallcoverings, paint and light fixtures, while the lobby now features new furniture and paint. The new lighting installed in Putnam’s Restaurant also helps enhance the original 1935 mural on its walls. This renovation debuted just after a 2017 makeover to the hotel’s grand ballroom and prefunction space that make up part of the property’s 12,000 sf of meeting space. During the summer, Putnam’s Patio, The Sun Terrace and an expansive lawn provide space for garden events.

The property’s location within Saratoga Spa State Park, specifically within walking distance of the Roosevelt Baths & Spa, make it an ideal getaway for groups. Ever since opening in 1935, the baths continue to attract groups to its natural mineral spring waters for the ultimate wellness retreat. Wellness activities such as yoga and a boot camp are also available for attendees in need of a fitness regimen.
