The Westin New York Grand Central Opens Following $75M Renovation

On October 12, The Westin New York Grand Central opened its doors following a $75 million transformation of what was previously the New York Helmsley Hotel. The 774-room landmark property is located one block from Grand Central Station, so you couldn’t be better connected to everything Manhattan, while also enjoying the Westin brand’s typical sense of serenity and healthy working environment. The midtown tunnel runs directly through the hotel garage, adding extra convenience for travelers coming from the airport.

The Westin New York Grand Central joins its sister property, The Westin New York at Times Square, which can be combined together for larger events and overflow.

For the grand opening, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg headlined the ribbon cutting ceremony. He spoke about Grand Central Station celebrating its 100th anniversary next year and Westin’s contribution to New York City.

“It’s a great day for Westin Hotels and Starwood, some of the biggest names in our city’s growing hospitality industry,” said the Mayor.

The Westin New York Grand Central features 12,000 sf of renovated meeting and event space, including four new break-out rooms and an expanded 4,100-sf ballroom with city views, historical accents and some of the fastest bandwidth in the city. The meeting space is located on the 3rd floor, and almost all rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows with lots of natural light.

“Our new landmark property will become a hub for both business and leisure travelers due to its prime location and draw of the signature Westin experience,” says Brian Povinelli, global brand leader of Westin Hotels & Resorts, “designed to provide our guests a bit of wellbeing in the center of bustling New York City.”

The meeting space will be extended in April next year with an additional ballroom and outdoor terrace for groups up to 100 pax.

“We are happy to announce the opening of the new Liberty Ballroom in April 2013. The room will provide an additional 2,800 sf of meeting space and an outdoor terrace area for private functions. SPG recently used the existing ballroom for a private function and transformed the space into a big purple lounge complete with Westin Heavenly Beds,” says Melissa Braverman, marketing manager.” The event was a huge success, and I was amazed how they completely transformed the space.”

The highly acclaimed Gerber Group food and nightlife proprietor known internationally for the Whiskey Blue bars at W Hotels is behind Westin’s latest F+B hot spot. THE LCL: Bar & Kitchen will offer a selection of biodynamic wines, regionally brewed craft beers, seasonal cocktails, and locally sourced food items. The scene transforms to a lounge setting in the evening where guests can enjoy organic choices like Roasted Beets and Coach Farm Chevre Cheese Salad, the LCL Flame Grilled LaFrieda Burger and Great New York Cheddar Cheese and Mac.

The 100-seat restaurant will be available for semi-private events starting in 2013.
