While the debate over whether or not to expand San Diego’s convention center space has no resolution in sight, the recent opening of the 400-room InterContinental San Diego adds to the destination’s meetings mix.

Built on the grounds of Lane Field—previous home of the San Diego Padres from 1936 to 1957—the new hotel is situated right in a prominent location along the San Diego waterfront. That means it’s just steps from popular attractions (and event spaces) like the USS Midway and Maritime Museum of San Diego as well as all the restaurant-dotted neighborhoods, including Little Italy, the Gaslamp Quarter and Seaport Village. Of course, it’s also within close proximity of the much-talked-about San Diego Convention Center.

But lucky for groups, the new property provides 95,000 sf of its own meeting and event space. It brings a lot of the outdoors into the 35,000 sf of indoor meeting space with natural light in every room, while its 60,000 sf of outdoor space varies, with terraces overlooking San Diego Bay and historic Lane Field Park. Even the fourth-floor rooftop pool has a sundeck and a yoga terrace for groups interested in incorporating a wellness concept into their meeting.

“InterContinental San Diego offers groups a sophisticated experience with amenities and refined service found at the area’s premier resorts, but in a more intimate, more accessible downtown setting,” says Lisa Bell, the property’s director of sales and marketing. “The hotel blends the excitement of the city with the relaxation and recreation of the water so attendees can easily experience everything the destination has to offer, even during an abbreviated program.”

Still to come, Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse will open next month, while Vistal is already open as the hotel’s signature restaurant, offering a blend of Baja, Pacific island and Mediterranean cuisines.
