Wynn Resorts will open the $2.6 billion, five-star Encore Boston Harbor Resort and Casino later this month as planned, despite two last-minute potential derailments.
Overlooking historic Boston Harbor, Encore Boston Harbor in Everett, Ma. will open as planned on June 23. The 33-acre destination gaming resort features Harborwalk, a six-acre waterfront park with pedestrian and bike paths, canoe launches, and waterfront dining. A water transportation system using low-profile, European-style boats will transport delegates and commuters to points in Boston, and water taxis can transport attendees from Logan Airport.
“This project was always about more than just a casino; it was developed by a casino company…known for creating world-class destination resorts,” said Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria.
For a few weeks though, it looked like Wynn Resorts might sell Encore Boston Harbor Resort to MGM Resorts International, but those talks ended on May 21 with no sale. There was also some question about Wynn Resorts’ Massachusetts gaming license being revoked. However, on May 28, while formally disagreeing with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission findings, Wynn Resorts agreed to meet their conditions, which included paying a $35 million fine and providing training for all employees on preventing harassment and discrimination. Explaining why they are not appealing the decision, the company said in a statement that an appeal “would delay the final conclusion of this matter.” With all issues resolved, the much-anticipated Wynn Resorts’ Encore Boston Harbor is taking reservations for stays beginning June 23.
An ambitious project, the $2.6 billion Boston Harbor Resort will sport a 210,000-square-foot casino, a premium spa, 15 dining and lounge venues, and 671 spacious (650 sf and up) guest rooms and suites.
Its event space includes more than 50,000 sf on the lobby level and 21,000 sf of seasonal outdoor space overlooking Boston Harbor and the skyline. The space includes ten break-out rooms, a promenade and a 37,000 sf ballroom, the largest in the area, second only to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.
