Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery, a multi-billion-dollar criminal industry.
While that may seem like a staggering problem for one person to tackle, that didn’t stop Sandy Biback, CMP Emeritus, CMM who has put all her energy and resources into fighting to end it with the organization she started, Meeting Professionals Against Human Trafficking (MPAHT) in April of 2017.
“We know that human/sex trafficking is happening in five-star hotels and highway motels,” says Biback, a veteran of the industry for more than three decades. “We know it is happening at large conventions, in convention centers, at large sporting events.” Relentlessly, she has addressed industry associations, colleges, and universities about the issue.
She has been successful in getting the hotel industry to become more open about human trafficking and what their training is and not being afraid to share that knowledge with planners. In addition, she has been able to convince many planners to add related questions on their RFP’s.
In a virtual event, Blurred Lines: Sex Trafficking & Supply Chains – Follow the Money, MPAHT will be offering virtual education on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. EST.
It will focus on understanding the crisis of human slavery. How does sex trafficking occur and what are the ways survivors are supported? How does the financial sector trace and combat trafficking? What are the products connected with human slavery?
Learn first-hand accounts from Toronto speakers who are leading the way in combating human trafficking and creating resources to help survivors reclaim their lives.
Speakers at MPAHT’s first Virtual event are:
Nunzio Tramontozzi, Director – Special Investigations Unit with Scotiabank, and former Detective Sergeant for more than 30 years as the Officer in Charge of the Human Trafficking Enforcement Team, Toronto Police Service.
Tamara Cherry, Founder of Pickup Communications, a full-service public relations firm that specializes in supporting victims and survivors of traumatic events. Author of human trafficking novel All the Bumpy Pebbles. Former Videojournalist for CTV News Toronto, specializing in police and crime reporting.
Rhonelle Bruder, Founder and Executive Director of Project iRISE, a survivor-led non-profit dedicated to educating and empowering survivors of human trafficking and other forms of exploitation.
In addition, there will be a special musical guest from Toronto’s vibrant and soulful jazz scene. The program will include keynotes from Biback and a panel discussion. A virtual Zoom link will be provided 24 hours prior to the event start time.
