Racing automated toy cars in a competition fit for NASCAR is just one of the fun, interactive ways for meeting planners to help break the ice at their next event held at Bonaventure Resort & Spa in Weston, Fla. The resort partnered with Koncept Events earlier this summer to bring interactive teambuilding and networking concepts to Bonaventure attendees.
“What is trending today is different from even five years ago,” says Hillary Smith, CMP, CSEP partner at Koncept Events. “Meeting planners and management demand productive, relevant and innovative teambuilding platforms. We must evolve with our attendees in order to capture their attention and get the results that the organization is investing in and counting on.”
Koncept Events gets attendee attention by incorporating smart phones and iPads into a teambuilding experience or even theming an event using current topics from the news, movies and TV shows. For example, the company offers an iPad scavenger hunt in which up to 200 attendees are divided into teams. Using iPads and a customized teambuilding app, they have to compete in a timed race that includes completing mental and physical challenges in the nearby shopping district. The quirkier Golf Cart Parade activity encourages attendees to solve puzzles that earn points towards materials that are then used to customize golf carts. Once the materials are gathered, the teams create their individual golf cart to be paraded around the property.
“With all the clutter we see on social media and the Internet, we need to continuously raise the bar with new concepts that seize and sustain the attention of our over-stimulated attendees,” says Smith.
The 500-room resort recently renovated its 80,000 sf of meeting space, including the property’s Benchmark Conference Center, as well as enhanced its 23 acres of landscaped grounds and four signature swimming pools. These spaces serve as the perfect teambuilding playground for some of the quirky competitions put on by Koncept Events. Plus, the resort’s close proximity to the Everglades make it easy for attendees to explore the wetlands via golf cart or bike. Groups can even opt to participate in charitable activities such as helping rebuild the Everglades’ ecosystem.
“As a retreat-style center, there are no distractions and groups really feel ‘disconnected’ from the world,” says Smith. “Unlike many other Florida properties or conference centers in the U.S., the serene landscaping, spa and wellness programs provide a holistic value to the attendees that take them outside of the fast pace of life.”
In March, the resort introduced its High Impact Meetings concept to coincide with the renovation. Apart from offering updated facilities and a new partnership with Koncept Events, the resort is also offering special meeting rates starting at $139 per guest room per night through Dec. 31, 2015. The rate is available to meeting planners that book a minimum of 50 room nights. It includes a waived resort fee, complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property, and meeting planners can choose between 5% off the master account or a 1-hour welcome reception with beer, wine and the chef’s choice of appetizers.
