Part of Marriott’s Convention and Resort Network, the 1,360-room Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina hosts a wide range of events.

Its waterfront location and close proximity to the convention center make it an obvious choice for the typical medical meetings and association conferences, but it also attracts some quirkier events. Here are three quirky events that find the property’s new (as of June 2016) $107 million two-level event venue the perfect fit for their attendees.

San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival

The Marriott property is all set to host the San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival this November. As the headquarter hotel for the event each year, the hotel is used to hosting the event’s sommelier series, dubbed “Somm Con” and chef dinner before the big event on Nov. 18. The hotel’s creative F&B menus, especially at its Marina Kitchen Restaurant & Bar, have made an impact at the conference, with the hotel’s chef winning recognition at the festival in the past.

Comic-Con International

Of course, San Diego is known for hosting Comic-Con International, the annual comic convention that brings about 10,000 attendees to the city each year. Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina highlighted its meeting space this year by transforming its San Diego Ballroom into a colorful Nintendo gaming paradise, while its pool became a festive poolside location for Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. Komic-Kazi sushi was just one of the few tasty treats offered through the hotel’s restaurant.

Romance Writers of America

The first group to use the hotel’s new event space last year was Romance Writers of America when they met last July. The conference brought together 2,000 romance writers to network with fellow writers and interact with editors, publishers, vendors, retailers and everything else related to romance literature.
