Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach VCB, the organization dedicated to promoting Charlotte County, FL, is celebrating Destination Professionals Day to honor the people and organizations that drive tourism, economic growth and community vitality worldwide.

The date holds special significance: on Feb. 19, 1896, members of the Detroit Chamber of Commerce and the Detroit Manufacturers Club came together at the Cadillac Hotel in Detroit, MI, to form the world’s first destination organization, the Detroit Convention and Businessman’s League. With a mission of “hustling for conventions,” this group laid the foundation for an industry that has since grown into a global driver of economic and social progress.

Today, there are more than 10,000 destination organizations around the world representing a broad spectrum of entities, including destination marketing organizations (DMOs), visitor and convention bureaus (VCBs), tourism boards, sports commissions and film offices.

These organizations are a cornerstone of the travel and tourism industry, which employs 371 million people and was expected to contribute about 10.3% of global GDP—more than $11.7 trillion—to the global economy in 2025, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council.

Take a look at Charlotte County’s visitor economic impact for 2025:

  • Welcomed 1,132,300 visitors.
  • A total economic impact of $1,259,402,080, the fourth time the destination surpoassed $1 billion.
  • Direct spending on accommodation, restaurants, groceries, transportation, attractions, entertainment and shopping was $850,506,200.
  • Total net tax benefit paid by visitors was $34,728,960.
  • Tourism supported 10,740 jobs and generated $367,583,900 of wages and salaries.
  • Taxes paid by visitor reduces household resident taxes over $865 each year and supports no state income tax.
  • Visitor satisfaction rate was 99% very satisfied or satisfied.

Our 35+ businesses located at Fishermen’s Village thrive thanks to the passion, enthusiasm, partnerships and first-class experiences coordinated by the Visitor & Convention Bureau, resulting in mass media outreach far beyond what we can accomplish on our own.”
