What does the AI boom actually mean for the people whose jobs are on the line?

To find out, my colleagues drilled down into the debate in Nevada, and how the state’s labor unions are deciding which politicians to back ahead of the midterms.

What they found was a split. Some workers are riding the construction boom of new data centers in northern Nevada. Others, working the Las Vegas Strip, are watching robots take over everything from hotel check-ins to customer service, in real time. Hear from how they think here.

That same split is showing up just about everywhere, including inside the companies building the infrastructure for this technology. To help fund its AI investment, Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to 60,000 employees. Amazon cut 16,000 corporate jobs this year.

The industry justifies the AI-induced job losses by pointing to new jobs being created to replace the old ones. That may well be true in the aggregate in the long term.

But the net job number doesn’t mean much if you’re one of the people caught in between—and politicians are going to be judged on how they answer for it. We’ll be following the upcoming midterms’ implications for AI closely.

In this week’s [newsletter], we’re also sharing our biggest takeaways from Anthropic’s S-1 filing, one of the most anticipated IPOs of the year, and digging into the new era of how Big Tech is actually funding its AI investments. [Eds Note: Founded in January 2021 by former researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic is an AI safety and research company whose core product is Claude, a family of LLMs and conversational AI assistant.]
