San Antonio’s transformed Gunter Hotel blends storied history with modern luxury.
The storied Gunter Hotel, steps from San Antonio’s Riverwalk, has completed phase 1 of a $57 million renovation and reopened as part of Marriott Bonvoy’s Tribute Portfolio. Originally built in 1909, the hotel has 311 guest rooms and 20,000 square feet of event space. Reimagined interior spaces celebrate its Beaux-Arts architectural legacy while integrating bold, contemporary design elements.
The Gunter’s newly renovated event space includes 13 meeting rooms of various sizes. The largest group venue is the Crystal Ballroom, accommodating up to 350 people for a reception and 240 for a banquet. The Rose Room can accommodate up to 180 for a reception and 140 for a banquet. The Terrace, overlooking Houston Street and the Majestic Theatre, is another popular setting for receptions. Interior design throughout the event space reflects the hotel’s emphasis on Beaux-Arts references such as classical symmetry, ornate chandeliers and luxurious materials blended with modern styling and state of the art technology.
All 311 guest rooms—including 30 suites and 14 ADA rooms—have been renovated with modern bathrooms, mid-century-inspired fixtures, and a refined color palette. The overall vibe is timeless elegance. As a tribute to blues legend Robert Johnson, who famously recorded at the hotel in 1936, each room includes a record player and a copy of his first album, with a curated vinyl library available in the lobby with more than 900 albums. An onsite Vinyl Ambassador can provide personal recommendations upon request.
The hotel’s four original food and beverage experiences have partially opened, with full openings expected soon. Also on the horizon is a new recording studio, designed as a nod to the hotel’s musical heritage and a space for today’s artists to leave their mark. Accessed through a hidden staircase, the richly appointed social lounge will feature jewel-toned interiors, polished brass accents and Art Deco accents. Intended as an atmospheric retreat, the recording studio is slated to open later this year.
