Salt Lake City’s Salt Palace Convention Center (SPCC) earned what is being called the first ‘WELL Health-Safety Rating for convention venues’ from the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI).

The certification recognizes exceptional operational policies, maintenance, stakeholder engagement and emergency preparedness. While over 4,500 global projects have achieved this standard, SPCC is the first convention center to receive it.

“This rating is a testament to our proactive approach to health and safety, and the trust we strive to build with every guest who walks through our doors,” Dan Hayes, GM of the Salt Palace Convention Center said in a statement. “We’re honored to lead the way in setting a global standard for convention centers.”

SPCC earned the WELL Health-Safety Rating by enhancing emergency preparedness through regular plan reviews, maintaining safety equipment, and creating specialized procedures for vulnerable groups like children, seniors, and those with disabilities.

The center also improved emergency access via QR codes throughout the venue linking directly to building emergency resources. Beyond emergency readiness, SPCC excelled in employee health initiatives, offering sick leave, health benefits, and mental-health support.

A Sustainable Heart

Besides this newest distinction, the 515,000-sf Salt Palace Convention Center, along with its in-house partners Visit Salt Lake and Encore, have attained 3 Events Industry Council Sustainable Event Standards Certifications (EIC SIS). Levels are Gold, Silver and Silver, respectively.

In addition, the SPCC is one of only a few convention centers in the nation that generates Solar Renewable Energy Credits. Events can purchase SRECs (generated directly from the Salt Palace’s 600,000-sf Solar Array) to offset their carbon footprint. The Salt Palace generates about 17 percent of its power through these 6,006 solar panels.
