The project will be a game changer for meetings and conventions if approved by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) board of directors next week.

The Boring Company (TBC), Elon Musk’s innovative infrastructure company, has been chosen by the LVCVA to design, construct and operate a people mover for the Las Vegas Convention Center. The autonomous, high-speed electric vehicles will travel through a loop of underground express tunnels, potentially connecting Downtown, the Las Vegas Convention Center, the Las Vegas Boulevard Resort Corridor, McCarran International Airport and more.

“Our destination thrives on innovation and reinvention,” said LVCVA CEO and President Steve Hill in a recent press release. “The Boring Company’s concept allows us to continue providing the world-class experience our guests and clients have come to expect and move people in an efficient and cost-effective manner with advanced technology.” Both TBC and the LVCVA are expecting the people mover to lead the way in the evolution of Southern Nevada transportation, while also further securing Las Vegas’ reputation as the No. 1 conventions city.

“Our destination thrives on innovation and reinvention.”

The LVCVA-Musk partnership will also usher in yet another exciting facet to the Las Vegas Convention Center expansion, currently underway with a 2021 completion date. The center’s outstretch to 200 acres originally had convention-goers walking approximately two miles end-to-end. The people mover will fix this faux pas, explains Steve Davis, president of TBC—in sync with the LVCVA’s expansion timeline. “Upon approval, [the people mover] can be in use by Las Vegas Convention Center guests within one year.”

Pending approval, TBC and the LVCVA will collaborate on design, construction and operational plans, and negotiate a contract for final approval this June. The project’s estimated fiscal impact is $35 to $55 million.
