Located on the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula, Hampton is known for its seafaring culture (which it gets from its Chesapeake Bay location), historic roots and NASA connection. For visiting groups, following are three activities that will leave attendees with a true sense of this lovely southern city.
1) Host an off-site event at Virginia Air & Space Center
The Virginia Air & Space Center is the visitor center for NASA Langley Research Center and Langley Air Force Base. The center features the Adventures in Flight and Space Quest galleries, as well as over 100 hands-on exhibits. There are four generations of spacecraft on permanent display, including the Apollo 12 Command Module. Events for 20 to 2,000 can be held during hours in the Aerospace Library or after hours in the Space Gallery, History Gallery or Main Gallery. Companies can even arrange for a private IMAX movie for attendees.
2) Tour the Casemate Museum at Fort Monroe
Fort Monroe was named a National Monument by President Obama on November 1, 2011. It the site where the first Africans landed in British North America and where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was imprisoned. Both Robert E. Lee and Edgar Allen Poe were stationed at Fort Monroe. It is also the site where the Contraband Slave Decision was made by General Benjamin Butler, a decision that later led to the Emancipation Proclamation.
3) Charter the Miss Hampton II
The Miss Hampton II, Hampton’s double-decked tour boat, offers daily narrated cruises of the Hampton Roads Harbor and Chesapeake Bay. Groups of up to 117 people can enjoy a three-hour cruise or an all-day river experience.
