Outdoor adventures, off-the-beaten-track destinations, the latest tech—Here’s what Millennial attendees prefer when they travel.

By the year 2020, Millennials will make up more than half of the global workforce. A survey of 1,000 Millennials by luggage maker Bugaboo Boxer shares their preferences when it comes to travel.

Adventure travel

One of the top trends for 2018 is adventure travel, with more than 70 percent of participants selecting their next vacation destination based on adventure activities and itineraries followed by local art, music and cultural events with 45 percent.

Off-the-beaten path destinations

Think Iceland, Italy, Greece, Thailand and New Zealand.

Social media inspiration

45 percent look to social media and blogs for travel inspiration for their next adventure; 58 percent post more often when traveling than at home with the goal of sharing their adventures with friends and family.

Experiences over products

80 percent spend most of their money food and drinks when traveling. Only 2 percent reported spending their money shopping.

Tech centric

72 percent prefer to check in online and use their phone as a boarding pass.

Integration into local communities

60 percent prefer exploring the destination by foot, followed by public transportation and on-demand transportation services; 48 percent of Millennial travelers surveyed prefer staying at share-economy accommodations.

Self-research

Millennials use their own resources (Google, Wikipedia, TripAdvisor, travel sites and blogs) to book their trips. Surprisingly, 89 percent booked their travel through a computer or laptop vs. an app or mobile phone. Only 2 percent used a travel agent or travel specialist.

Work-life balance

38% never check their work e-mail while on vacation; 52 percent of participants check their work e-mail once a day while on vacation.

No airline loyalty

68 percent of participants are not loyal to any airline and book based on price and flight-scheduled.
