Restaurant Trends: 10 Best Cities for Foodies Worldwide

Tokyo restaurants top the list for gourmet F&B Tokyo tops the rankings of popular foodie cities, with Michelin-starred cuisine in 530 restaurants.

Meeting and incentive attendees always rank F&B high on the list of destination attractions. Where can  planners find the most popular dining establishments worldwide? A new survey from BacanaPlay has analyzed more than 50 cities to discover favorite foodie destinations. Each city’s composite score was based on metrics that included the number of Michelin-starred establishments, the cost of a mid-range three-course meal, the number of food festivals and culinary events, the number of cheap eats, mid-range and fine dining restaurants listed on TripAdvisor and the average ratings for top restaurants.

Top 10 Cities for Foodies

1. Tokyo. Tokyo earned a composite score of 40 out of 40. More than 530 restaurants in Tokyo have Michelin stars and meal costs are relatively affordable. Tokyo also hosted four major food festivals this year..

2. London. With a composite score of 37.1, London has 349 Michelin-starred restaurants, and more than 15,000 dining options.

3. Rome.  Rome earned a composite score of 36.1. The city offers an abundance of good restaurants at all price points, and many top fine dining restaurants—with a total of 14,000 establishments city-wide.

4. Paris. The fourth favorite destination for food lovers is Paris, France, scoring 35.7. It has the second-highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants, at 499, along with more than 1,000 high-end restaurants. This year Paris is hosting four food festivals.

5. New York. The only American city to make the top 10 list, New York City earned a composite score of 33.3. Attendees will find a blend of fine dining and affordable eats, with nearly 10,000 options to choose from. New York has 400 Michelin-starred restaurants and is hosting five food festivals this year.

6. Barcelona, Spain. Scoring 28.6, Barcelona has 110 Michelin-starred restaurants, and more than 8,500 restaurants city wide, with one of the highest overall top restaurant ratings on the list.

7. Madrid. With a composite rating of 28.1, Madrid has 9,140 restaurants. 166 have been recognized with Michelin stars.

8. Singapore. Following close behind Madrid, Singapore received a composite score of 27.7. The city has more than 6,000 restaurants with various options from cheap eats to fine dining, and 289 Michelin-starred establishments.

9. Bangkok. With a composite score of 26.3, Bangkok offers the most affordable dining options on the list, and also has 170 Michelin-starred restaurants.

10. Osaka This Japanese city earned high restaurant ratings and a composite score of 25.1 to cap off the top 10 list.
