McKinney National Airport (DTX) is weeks away from launching commercial passenger service, and its airline partner is already expanding.
Avelo Airlines will add nonstop flights to Atlanta, Denver, Nashville and New Orleans beginning Dec. 16 and 17, bringing the carrier’s total number of destinations from McKinney to nine.
The announcements come as construction of DTX’s new passenger terminal remains on schedule to open Nov. 11, Veterans Day. Airport officials and construction partners recently gave Avelo leadership, community members and local media a first look inside the terminal, six weeks before it opens to travelers.
For North Texas travelers, the new service adds a commercial airport option north of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, with DTX located in McKinney, about 40 minutes away.
Avelo’s new December routes include:
- Atlanta (ATL): Four times weekly beginning Dec. 16
- Denver (DEN): Four times weekly beginning Dec. 16
- Nashville (BNA): Twice weekly beginning Dec. 17
- New Orleans (MSY): Twice weekly beginning Dec. 17
The new routes join Avelo’s previously announced inaugural service from DTX to Fort Myers beginning Nov. 11; Las Vegas and Orlando beginning Nov. 12; and Tampa and Fort Lauderdale beginning Nov. 19.
Avelo will base three 184-seat Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 aircraft at McKinney, a move expected to create more than 100 local jobs, including positions for pilots, flight attendants, aircraft technicians, ground handling and customer service personnel.
“The response from North Texas has been extraordinary, and the bookings back that up,” said Avelo Airlines Founder and CEO Andrew Levy in a media statement. “Adding four new destinations and a third-based aircraft before we have even flown our first flight from McKinney says everything about our commitment here.”
The Houston-based carrier will operate flights Wednesday through Monday from DTX.
The terminal opening marks another milestone for DTX as it transitions to commercial passenger service. During the event, Federal Aviation Administration Airports Southwest Region Director Ignacio Flores presented the airport’s Airport Operating Certificate to City of McKinney Director of Aviation Ken Carley.
“We’re weeks away from completing construction on our brand-new passenger terminal, which is on time and generating excitement from our North Texas community,” Carley said, adding, “Our region has deep talent in the construction trades and aviation, and this growth will create more opportunities for well-paying, rewarding careers.”
