Refreshed and expanded, the award-winning, world-class Cairns Convention Centre is the centerpiece of the New Cairns.
Set amidst nature’s pristine playground where two World Heritage icons meet – the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, the purpose-built Cairns Convention Centre delivers everything clients, and delegates expect from an international venue.
Awarded the AIPC’s World’s Best Congress Centre twice, the Cairns Convention Centre will open a 114,000-square-foot expansion in 2023. Featuring a new façade inspired by the world heritage listed Wet Tropics Rainforest, the expansion includes a stunning, floor-to-ceiling, glass-fronted, 410-seat plenary space, exhibition zone for up to 30 booths, three new meeting rooms and a 500-seat ballroom and outdoor terrace overlooking the breathtaking vista of the Trinity Inlet.
The expansion complements the recently refurbished 2,300-seat auditorium, 17 meeting rooms and 5,000-seat arena – all refreshed in the palettes of iconic regional heroes – the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics Rainforest – and features new, state-of-the-art audio-visual and lighting capability.
The Wet Tropics Rainforest inspires the new, green-planted glass façade, and the contemporary light interiors highlight the region’s natural beauty. The large, undercover, tropically planted forecourt and Porte-cochere feature quiet spaces and reflection pools for delegates to relax and meet throughout the day.
Complemented by a culinary team led by a Michelin-trained Executive Chef, the food and beverage team focus on incorporating locally sourced, fresh produce into their exquisite menus.
Maintaining a 26-year commitment to stringent environmental controls and ongoing sustainable event delivery, the Cairns Convention Centre holds Bronze Earth Check benchmark status and features:
- Rainwater storage collection via the Centre’s double-layer pleated plate roof captures seasonal tropical rains and channels them directly into storage tanks.
- Water flow restrictors modify restricted water usage on all outlets.
- A 30% – 35% provision of solar-generated hot water
- Purpose-built shading devices along the eastern side of the building, reducing the level of air-conditioning required to keep the Centre cool.
Coupled with a commitment to the longevity of local community partnerships, Cairns Convention Centre is a member of Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef and a proud sponsor of rescue turtles through the work of the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.
An international convention venue located in one of the world’s most desirable destinations, the Cairns Convention Centre expansion and refurbishment sets a new benchmark in business event delivery driven by a passionate team of professionals and the city’s warm welcome.
