Oracle’s OpenWorld, held each year in San Francisco, is a model for trade show organizers of both innovation and sustainability, along with other mega-meetings such as Greenbuild. The brains behind the event, Paul Salinger, is a board member of the Green Meetings Industry Council and long-time sustainability evangelist.

The following highlights from the 2017 Openworld trade show, which attracted 60,000 attendees, are just a sampling of the positive environmental and social impact it created:

3,670 Oracle OpenWorld attendees offset their own travel emissions in the registration process, equivalent to 2,884 MT CO2.

78 metric tons of recycling was generated, enough to fill 8 garbage trucks. 48 metric tons of compost was diverted from the landfill, enough to fill almost four garbage trucks.

2,767 leftover meals were donated to Food Runners and San Francisco City Impact.

3,718 lbs. of OpenWorld totes were donated to seniors at Cayuga Community Connectors for use as emergency go bags.

50,000 sf of carpet was diverted from the landfill and repurposed by CLEAR in Lincoln, Calif.

26 metric tons of donations were generated by Oracle OpenWorld, enough to fill 2 garbage trucks.
