Ahead of Global Meetings Industry Day on Thurs., April 3rd, Prevue joined MPI’s final session of four webinars spotlighting planners in different parts of the world. The session on March 27th focused on meetings in a region that probably gets less focus than it should: Latin America.
“I think it’s really enticing to look at Latin America as a wonderful incentive destination, that we only need to think of the wildlife, the flora and the fauna,” said Alastair Turner, Managing Director of EI8HT PR & Marketing, a specialist research, marketing and creative agency. “But I want to celebrate the parts of Latin America that perhaps have fallen under the radar.
“We need to look beyond those incentives at the major companies headquartered in Latin America that are using meetings to get their messages out there, both globally and locally. Latin America used to be known for medical conventions,” he added, “but the corporate world there is more sophisticated now.”
Following Turner’s introduction, the program was moderated by Melissa Acosta, CEO and founder of South Florida-based Cultural Spark, consultants who equip organizations with tools to succeed in diverse markets.
“It’s important to reflect on what connection really means,” Acosta said. “At Cultural Spark, we deliver that cultural connection.”
Acosta went on to introduce “nine incredible LATAM MPI chapters, each sharing their unique voices,” she said. “This region is incredibly diverse. Spanish may be the official language, but there are distinct dialects, values and ways of doing business. Whether you’re planning an event in Bogota or Buenos Aires, navigating these nuances helps us go beyond logistics. It helps us connect, human to human.”
Following are the nine MPI Latin America chapter leaders:
- Cinthya Uzcategui, MPI Central America
- Diana Bauer, MPI Peru
- Yanira Garcia, MPI Colombia
- Irene Guijarro, MPI Ecuador
- Fabia Tanabe, MPI Brazil
- Pablo Sismanian, MPI Argentina
- Alejandro Escalante, MPI Mexico
- Salvador de Anda, MPI Bajio Occidente Mexico
- Humberto Garcia, MPI Caribe Mexicano
Also appearing during the session was Rick Magana, Chair of MPI LATAM, who said “this region, Latin America, is generating new levels of service, new ideas of what international meetings are and above all, how my colleagues, the MPI members, are ‘breaking it’ all over Latin America.”
Actually what Magana said was his colleagues were “rompiendala”—or “crushing it” in English—in the meetings industry all over Latin America.
