In meetings and incentives travel, there’s a difference between simply visiting a destination and experiencing it the way attendees will. Some hotels host groups. Others shape how groups connect with a destination long after they’ve flown home.
Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale falls firmly into the second category.
As someone who grew up in South Florida, Fort Lauderdale was always the “let’s go somewhere fun, but not Miami Beach.” Experiencing the destination again through a MICE lens, however, completely reframed the city for me.
What emerged wasn’t just another South Florida meetings hotel, but a lifestyle-driven property that understands how modern groups want to gather: connected to the destination and intentionally balancing productivity with play.

A Boutique Alternative to the Convention Model
Launched in 2015, Hyatt Centric was created for what Hyatt calls “Modern Explorers” — travelers who want more than a place to stay. They want hotels that feel rooted in the neighborhoods around them.
That philosophy is immediately evident at Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale.
Located in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale, roughly 10 minutes from Las Olas Beach and 15 miles north of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the 238-room property blends urban energy with the city’s coastal personality. Nautical-inspired design touches, waterfront access and location along Las Olas Boulevard create a hotel experience that feels connected to the destination rather than isolated from it.
For meeting planners, that distinction matters.
“Our big appeal is the exclusivity and boutique-style offerings,” said Katherine Beja-McLennan, Area Director of Sales & Marketing at Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale. “Our downtown location and walkability to local attractions are also major advantages for groups.”
The hotel’s meeting space makes it particularly well-suited for mid-sized corporate meetings, executive retreats and incentive groups seeking a more intimate environment than a large-scale convention hotel.

Meetings Designed Around Connection
“We can plan and execute everything from opening receptions to poolside events and dinners,” said Beja-McLennan. “Our ballroom and breakout rooms are all located on the same floor, making it convenient for groups to stay connected and have access to everything they need in one place.”
The property offers approximately 13,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor meeting space anchored by the 3,017-square-foot Stranahan Ballroom, which accommodates up to 200 banquet-style or 220 reception-style. Additional options include the 968-square-foot Tarpon Suite, able to accommodate 80 guests in a banquet-style layout and the 597-square-foot Andrews meetings space, able to host up to 50 attendees.
Outdoor venues further expand programming flexibility. The New River Terrace accommodates receptions for up to 80 guests, while the more intimate Las Olas Terrace creates an ideal setting for networking events and cocktail functions for up to 40 guests. Groups can also utilize the Elev8 Rooftop Pool & Bar for wellness programming, social events and evening receptions overlooking downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Along with built-in audio and visual technology, the hotel offers a dedicated event staff and on-site culinary and catering services.
“Groups are really looking for experiences that allow attendees to explore the local area rather than remain confined to one place,” Beja-McLennan added.

That experiential mindset ultimately defines the property’s MICE appeal.
A sunrise yoga session at the rooftop pool deck set the tone for the day with warm South Florida breezes and skyline views. Just outside the hotel, Huizenga Park adds another layer of connectivity to the destination. The green space, lined with trees, benches and outdoor seating, carries a vibe reminiscent of Bryant Park in New York City, creating a natural gathering point for attendees exploring downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Complimentary bikes allowed guests to experience the city at a slower pace along the Las Olas waterfront, where riverwalk pathways, marina views and people watching reveal Fort Lauderdale’s evolving personality beyond the beach scene.
One of the standout experiences during the program was a private small-boat tour with Riverfront Gonola Tours through Fort Lauderdale’s canal system, a massive network of waterways that has earned the city its nickname, the “Venice of America,” and gave us a peek at fabulous multimillion-dollar waterfront homes.
Then came pickleball.
At The Fort — one of South Florida’s fastest-growing pickleball destinations — groups can participate in everything from casual matches to organized competitions. The facility features 43 courts, a dedicated stadium, food and beverage outlets and event-friendly infrastructure that naturally lends itself to incentive programming and team-building activities.
Rooftop Energy and Social-Driven Design
Evenings at the hotel naturally transition into social mode. Perhaps the hotel’s most memorable conversation piece is Room 901 — a hidden speakeasy tucked inside what was originally intended to be a guest room.
According to the hotel, the space was transformed after guests frequently requested room changes due to its awkward layout. Rather than redesign the room conventionally, the hotel leaned into the opportunity and created an intimate speakeasy experience complete with moody lighting, craft cocktails and a highly exclusive atmosphere.

The venue accommodates only about a dozen guests during select times, making it particularly well-suited for VIP gatherings, executive cocktails or top-producer experiences that feel personalized and memorable.
Groups can remain on property at Harborwood Urban Kitchen & Bar or step directly into the energy of Las Olas Boulevard, where restaurants, nightlife and waterfront dining are all within walking distance.
The Bigger Shift in MICE Travel
What the property ultimately does well is make Fort Lauderdale feel accessible. Groups aren’t shuttled from ballroom to ballroom or isolated inside a convention bubble. They’re walking Las Olas Boulevard, cruising the waterways and discovering corners of the city.
That’s what resonated. It was the feeling that the destination was part of the experience from the moment we checked in — and for planners looking to create meetings that feel more personal, social and genuinely connected to place, that may be Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale’s biggest advantage.
