Meeting planners looking for boutique event space in New York City have another reason to consider The Benjamin Royal Sonesta.

The landmark Midtown Manhattan hotel has been named Hotel of the Year by the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) Greater New York Chapter, recognizing its commitment to guest experience, innovation and hospitality excellence. The award was presented during the organization’s 30th Annual Frank W. Berkman Tourism Achievement Awards Gala.

The recognition comes on the heels of a multimillion-dollar renovation completed in 2024 that refreshed the nearly century-old property while expanding its appeal to the meetings and events market.

“This award belongs to 209 rooms worth of stories, and to the people who make those stories possible every single day,” said Simon Chapman, General Manager, in a media statement. “From our front desk and housekeeping teams to engineering, security, revenue, sales, operations, and marketing, every member of our team plays a role in creating Royal Moments for every guest who walks through our doors.”

Enhanced Meetings Product

The renovation introduced flexible meeting spaces designed for executive meetings, board sessions and private events. The hotel now offers modular meeting rooms accommodating up to 100 attendees, business suites including the new Sonesta Work Suite, and unique accommodations such as the Benjamin Penthouse and Beverly Penthouse for receptions and special events. Catering is provided by The Parliament restaurant, led by Executive Chef Rakmin Lee.

Looking Ahead to the Centennial

Originally built in the 1920s as the Beverly Hotel and designed by renowned architect Emery Roth, the Neo-Romanesque property was designated a New York City landmark in 2017. The recent investment modernizes the hotel while preserving its historic character as it prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027.
